More information on Lawn Irrigation!

Lawns depend on rain showers or us for their steady supply of water. You need to make sure your lawn receives the best lawn irrigation of the proper amount of water at the proper time.

Always water according to the weather. Do more lawn irrigation when there will be warmer temperatures, bright sun, wind, low humidity and rainless stretches. Water less when the temperature is cooler, the sky is overcast, there's no wind, high humidity, or it's raining.

Do not start lawn irrigation at night. Nighttime is not the right time to water your lawn. Night watering encourages fungi to grow on the grass and encourages diseases such as summer patch, dollar spot, and brown patch. The best time to water the lawn is in the early morning between 5 and 8 A.M. There is less evaporation then and the greatest penetration into the soil.

For how much to water the lawn there is no hard fast rule. Climates, soil condition, grass type and size of the lawn all matters into determining the right lawn irrigation. There are two rules that can be used for any lawn though. The healthiest lawns are those that are watered infrequently. Lawns only need 1" of water to reach deep into the soil where the root systems are. You should also water slowly. The water should moisten the soil at depths of 6 to 8 inches. Deep lawn irrigation promotes deep root growth and helps the pants survive dry spells better.

To determine how much water is being put down during your lawn irrigation, place an empty soup can in the path of your water sprinklers. Run the sprinklers for 15 minutes and then using a ruler measure the amount of water in the can. This should help you figure out how long you need to water to get 1" on the lawn. It usually takes between 30 minutes and 1 hour for 1 inch of water to get into the lawn.

Short waterings actually work the best for lawn irrigation. Water about 1/4 of an inch on the lawn and then wait 10 minutes. Then water another 1/4 of an inch and wait. Do this until a full inch has gone on the lawn. When you water the lawn a little at a time, the soil is better prepared to absorb the water. This helps grass develop strong roots as well.
