More information on Bahia Grass!

There are many different types of lawn grass for different growing zones. Whether you're starting your lawn or reseeding the lawn, choose the grass best suited to your climate. Warm season grasses, such as Bahia grass, can handle droughts much better than cold season grasses.

Bahia grass has a tough, coarse texture and flat grass blades. It does adapt nicely to a wide range of soil conditions, but it is a warm season grass. This grass spreads slowly by short rhizomes, but once it takes hold it grows thick and requires little care. It pushes out weeds without creating thatch. It does need frequent mowing though. Bahia grass is prone to mole crickets, dollar spot, and brown patch. Keep the lawn mower's blades sharp so there are no ragged or uneven cuts. Popular cultivars of Bahia grass are Pensacola and Wilmington.

Bahia grass is terrific for dry areas, as it is drought tolerant. It tends to grow long roots that reach out for all available soil moisture.

Some older varieties of Bahia grass grow tall fast, much faster than popular grasses. The grass may go to seed while other grass in your lawn is much shorter. Make sure you use grass that grows at the same speed in your lawn, or you'll have to mow more often than you'd like. The best cutting height for Bahia grass is 2". You should mow Bahia grass when it's 3" tall.

Bahia grass is also good for high traffic areas in your lawn. High traffic areas with thinning spots are ripe for weeds to grow. You need to plant durable, traffic resistant grass in high traffic areas. Bahia grass is a warm season grass that will handle high traffic areas of your lawn.

During hot, dry spells, the kind Bahia grass can tolerate, it's still a good idea to water the lawn deeply and then leave it alone for several days. This encourages the grass to grow deeper into the soil. By watering the lawn to a depth of about 6 inches and then not watering again for several days, you are encouraging grass roots to develop in the ground, not near the surface. Saturating this layer of soil activates deep root growth that protects your lawn during dry spells
